Program Summary
The Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) STARTALK Teacher Program is a program directly leading to California Teaching credential. The 10-year Berkeley STARTALK Summer Teacher Program and the 2-year Berkeley STARTALK Infrastructure Credential Enrichment Program will be moved to NDNU in 2018. The 2018 NDNU STARTALK (non-residential) Teacher Program will offering two sets of courses for both continuing participants (15) moving from the Berkeley STARTALK Infrastructure Program and new participants (12) recruited for the proposed 2018 program. The 2018 NDNU STARTALK Teacher Program is a federally funded program that offers professional development for Mandarin teachers. Upon successfully completing this 23 days (13 days online and 10 days onsite) summer enrichment program, you will receive three units for “Methods of Teaching Chinese” course from NDNU and a certificate of completion.
The 12 newly recruited teacher participants will attend a hybrid workshop in June 2018 that was traditionally offered by the Berkeley STARTALK Teacher Program. Teachers who meet the following criteria will be considered for participation in the 2018 NDNU STARTALK Teacher program:
In addition to the professional development in teaching, the program has offered leadership development opportunity to the program graduates. All of three mentor teachers have been invited to serve as a member of our instructional team after completing our program with exceptional performance. Many of them were inspired by this program and decided to pursue their teaching credentials after completing the Berkeley STARTALK Program.
This is a no cost, non-residential program with no travel support for the teacher participants. However, free meals (breakfast, lunch and two snacks) will be provided during 10 days onsite program.

- Able to participate in the 23-day, 184-hour, 3-credit hybrid program;
- Currently teaching or planning to teach;
- Holding teacher credentials in other subjects but planning to teach Chinese in the coming school year;
- Completed a teacher training program for teaching Chinese or teaching English and need further professional development in teaching Chinese;
- Hold an academic degree in Chinese language and literature and plan to teach Chinese.
