Program Description
The 10-year Berkeley STARTALK Summer Teacher Program and the 2-year Berkeley STARTALK
Infrastructure Credential Enrichment Program will be moved to Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU)
in 2018 after the program director Stella Kwoh retires from UC Berkeley.
This group program directly leads to California Teaching Credential. All courses offered in this program are required by NDNU teacwww.ndnu.edu/education-and-leadership/single-subject/hing credential program. Teacher participants can choose to take NDNU Single Subject Credential Program (for teaching in the middle and high schools ) or Multiple Subject Credential Program (for teaching in elementary schools ). The mission of the NDNU credential program is to provide an “excellent professional program in which community engagement and the values of social justice are integral to the learning experience.” The program is designed to guide candidates through a learning process, from building a foundation to increasing application by guided practice with
mentors in selected field practicum settings to prepare them to be effective teachers in California’s diverse schools. The 15 Students in group-1 are continuing students transferring to NDNU credential programs from 2017 Berkeley STARTALK Infrastructure Credential Enrichment Program for Chinese Language Teachers. In December, 2017, they had completed two online courses (Chinese linguistics and Methods I )offered by the 2017 Berkeley STARTALK Infrastructure Program and will transfer these two courses into NDNU credential program. All of the participants in this group have already enrolled in the credential
program and will continue to pursue their teaching credential after completing this proposed 2018 NDNU STARTALK Summer Teacher Program.
The 2018 NDNU STARTALK (non-residential)Teacher Program will continue the legacy of the the two Berkeley STARATALK Programs offering two sets of courses for both continuing participants (15) moving from the Berkeley STARTALK Infrastructure Program and new participants (12) recruited for the proposed 2018 program. The 15 students will continue taking courses offered by NDNU Credential Program in 2018.These three courses were recommended by the site visit team leader for the 2017 Berkeley STARTALK Infrastructure Credential Enrichment Program.
